Belmont Stakes Preview

Belmont Stakes Preview & Picks

The 141st running of the Belmont Stakes is Saturday with Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird the 2-1 morning line favorite. A total of 10 horses will go to the post, three of which have single-digit odds. Mine That Bird is the favorite at 2-1 followed by Charitable Man at 3-1 and Dunkirk at 4-1. The two favorites will start side by side as Mine That Bird is in post seven while Charitable Man is in post six.

The Belmont may not have a Triple Crown at stake in terms of horses but it does have a jockey Triple Crown on the line as Calvin Borel looks to become the first jockey ever to win all three races aboard different horses. He may have his work cut out for him against Charitable Man who has become the choice of many Belmont Park insiders this week. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is based at Belmont Park, and won this race in 2006 with Jazil.
"I hope to be 2 for 2," he said.

Big name trainers Nick Zito and D. Wayne Lukas have two horses each in this race as Zito has Miner's Escape and Brave Victory. Last year Zito won with Da’ Tara as a huge longshot. Lukas, who has won the Belmont four times in the past, has Luv Gov and Flying Private. The only two horses to have run in all three Triple Crown races will be Mine That Bird and Flying Private. A total of 19 horses competed in the Derby and six are back for the Belmont. Of the 13 horses that ran in the Preakness only three are back for the Belmont.

Mine That Bird is the favorite in the Belmont Stakes Odds but deep closers rarely win so Mine That Bird will have to buck a little history. Charitable Man is going to get the lead on Saturday and he will be the horse to catch. Chocolate Candy could be an interesting choice as he has Garrett Gomez in the irons and he could like the added distance. Dunkirk is another horse with a shot simply based on his ability. So far in his career he has been a disappointment though. Mr. Hot Stuff has been training well at Keeneland for the Belmont and could hit the board at a price. The rest of the horses, Summer Bird, Luv Gov, Flying Private, Miner’s Escape and Brave Victory look overmatched.

The insiders like Charitable Man in the Belmont Stakes and unless Mine That Bird can close a lot of ground late then Charitable Man should win. Chocolate Candy and Mr. Hot Stuff are two longshots that could provide some value with exotic wagers.
